24 Hours and Counting...

[Traducción]

In approximately 24 hours I'll be at Mount Sinai Hospital, ready for Dr. Lamelas to replace my aortic valve.

Lately, many folks have asked me if I feel nervous, apprehensive, or fearful. The answer is: No!

First, I'm keenly aware of what the procedure is all about. Given that I've known about this for over 30 years, nothing about it comes as a big surprise. Second, I'm keenly aware of the risks and I'm very comfortable with the odds. Third, I've done everything possible to increase my chances of success. All my lab tests, x-rays, and cardiac cath prove that my physical condition is very good; evidence that my body should easily sustain and recover from the operation.

If I die, I'm certain that, from a practical point of view, my family will be OK. From a personal relationship viewpoint, I'm certain they all know how much I love them and how important they are to me. They also know where I stand with regard to the differences that may exist between us. The younger ones know the road map I believe will lead them to living a happy life, it is stated in simple terms at the top of my blog: Be good, and do good, that's all they have to do. Likewise, my friends know I love them and that my friendship is true. My clients know I've worked hard and honestly for them. As far as I know, I have no enemies. I have no debts. Finally, God, as I know Him, knows my heart (no pun intended) and how thankful I am for the opportunity He gives me every day and the shame I feel when I squander it.

If I suffer from a severely debilitating injury, my wife is clearly aware of the condition under which I do not wish to live. It is also written. If faced with such a decision, I trust the one she makes will be the best one for us.

I'll deal with any other adverse circumstance I may face.

But, given the favorable odds, coupled with the talent and skill of Dr. Joseph Lamelas, I shall come out of this just fine.

Throughout the day of the surgery, since I'm going to be a bit busy, my friend Vicar will be posting blow-by-blow details throughout the day. I plan to post an entry as soon as I am able and when the medical staff allows me to do it. Hopefully, it will be tomorrow evening.
